“because they were not united by faith with those who listened.”
Hebrews 4:2 ESV
UNITY THAT MATTERS
The Atlanta United soccer team has taken the city and Major League Soccer by storm. In only their second season, United hold the single game attendance record of 72,243 fans and season average of 48,200. They were only the 4th MLS team to make the playoffs in their inaugural season and are a contender for this year’s league championship. The team’s primary tagline is “Unite and Conquer.” And “unite” is what they have done for this city. Someone pointed out that it is one of the only team sports in the city that most of the city can agree on. Because of the relative youth of MLS there isn’t a lot of lifelong team support for teams from other cities so the city has united around United.
Some unity is more important than others. Jesus values and rewards unity but He doesn’t reward all unity the same. In Hebrews 4:2 we are reminded that some of the Jewish believer’s missed out on the Promised Land and God’s promised rest because they failed to unite with those who had placed their faith in God’s plan to get them there.
There are some who say they don’t need the church or organized religion. And, because of so many hurtful things that have been done in the name of religion, that might be understandable. However, Jesus values His followers uniting together around faith in Him. When I love Jesus, I love what He loves and He loves His followers living in unity. Are you united with other believers? Do others know that you are united with God’s faith community? Is there someone you could invite into your faith community?
