“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.”
Hebrews 4:14 ESV
CLING TO HIS POSITION
There was a story about a boat that sank. One crewman was able to escape by swimming to a huge rock that was immovable against the waves. Trembling, the poor crewman clung to the rock. Soon the crewman was rescued by another passing boat. The sailors asked the crewman if he was afraid while hanging on to the rock. He replied: “Yes, I trembled with fear, but the rock didn’t!”
We may tremble in fear in life but Jesus never trembles. The author of Hebrews was attempting to encourage the early church to “hold fast” or cling to Jesus. In Hebrews 4 there are multiple reasons we are given to “hold fast” to our confession of faith in Jesus. One of those reasons was Jesus is “a great high priest who has passed through the heavens.” The Jewish audience would be very familiar with the role of the historical earthly high priest to provide blood sacrifices on behalf of the people. But Jesus’ personal sacrifice and elevated place in heaven makes Him superior to any earthly priest.
Priest, rabbis and preachers can’t save us. Only Jesus can save us. Earthly spiritual leaders struggle and “tremble” at times just like the rest of us. Jesus is the only unchangeable and unshakable one who can get us to heaven securely. What earthly person has been able to provide you with the most comfort in your seasons of fear or anxiety? How is Jesus better than that person? Confess to Jesus that you believe He is our reliable Savior and give Him any worries you have. Cling to Him today.
