“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy”
Hebrews 4:16 ESV
CLING TO HIS MERCY
A priest was driving down the freeway with two penguins sitting in the back seat of his car. A police officer pulled the priest over for speeding and upon seeing the penguins said to the priest “what do you think you’re doing with those penguins, take them to the zoo right away.” The officer then let the priest go with a warning. The next day the officer saw the priest drive by in his sedan with the penguins. The officer pulled the priest over and he saw that this time the penguins had sun glasses on. The Officer said to the priest “I told you yesterday to take those penguins to the zoo.” The priest said “I took them to the zoo yesterday, we’re going to the beach today.”
Part of a priest’s job was to help bring people closer to God. Hebrews 4 teaches us that Jesus is the Great High Priest and He wants to bring us to the “throne of grace, that we may receive mercy.” The benefit of Jesus having sympathy for the power of temptation is that He made it possible for us to be forgiven and to experience mercy.
The encouragement and invitation of Hebrews 4:16 is so powerful. We are invited to come close to God’s throne of mercy with confidence. We don’t have to have fear or shame but when we come to God with faith in Jesus we can come knowing we are welcome and there is mercy. God’s mercy is unshakable. Reflect on some of the special invitations you’ve been given. Some of them were probably extremely special and memorable. However, you have never been given a greater invitation than the invitation from Jesus to come and find mercy. Cling to Him in faith. Thank God for the mercy He has shown you.
