“who have tasted the heavenly gift,”
Hebrews 6:4 ESV
JESUS WANTS TO AWAKEN ME WITH A TASTE OF HEAVEN
One of our family’s favorite things about shopping is to walk through Sam’s or Costco on a day when they have food samples set up all over the store. On some days there are actually enough stations set up to get a pretty good lunch or dinner out of the deal. Even though we may use the samples to try and get full and save a few dollars, that’s not the point. The marketing idea is that the customer taste something they have never tasted before, they realize they like it and decide to actually buy the product because they liked what they tasted.
Hebrews 6:4 teaches that God uses “heavenly tastings” to open our eyes to what He has to offer us. It’s unclear what the “heavenly gift” in Hebrews 6:4 is a reference to. But what is clear is that it’s a free gift from God that comes from heaven. This free gift could refer to Jesus coming to earth or it could be a reference to a multitude of other things God allows us to experience. James 1:16-17 teaches, “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
It’s not uncommon to describe a very special experience as “a little bit of heaven on earth.” All of the good and perfect gifts you have ever received ultimately have their origin in heaven. What are some of the best gifts you have ever been given? How can those gifts be traced back to God? God wants those gifts to lead you to Him and to a place of faith and gratitude. Talk to God about His gifts in your life and how they make you feel.
