“ and have shared in the Holy Spirit,”

Hebrews 6:4 ESV

If you use an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning, you know what a snooze button is. When the alarm goes off, you can hit the snooze button and get nine more minutes of sleep. There are two problems with the snooze button: (1) If we continue to hit the button, we may end up being late for something—after all, we set the stupid alarm for a reason! (2) If we keep on hitting the snooze button, we may get so used to the sound of the alarm that we may not hear it at all.

The Bible teaches that one of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to be a spiritual alarm clock in our lives. Jesus said in John 16:8, “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” The Helper in John 16 is another name for the Holy Spirit. There were people in Hebrews 6 that had sensed the Holy Spirit’s alarms and convictions but had ignored them. God wanted to help them and they didn’t want His help.

The Holy Spirit works in our lives before our salvation and after our salvation. And we can hit snooze on the Holy Spirit so many times that it’s eventually too late to respond to the help God has for us. One day it will be too late to become a Christian. Or one day it may be too late to avoid the consequences of our sinful choices. Have you sensed God convicting you of anything lately? Did you respond by waking up and making the choices He wanted you to or did you hit the snooze and tell God later? Thank God for the Holy Spirit’s role in your life and ask God to give you a sensitive heart to His help.
