“and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
Hebrews 8:10 ESV
OUR PERSONAL GOD
Many of you are familiar with these lyrics: “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside I’ve got the month of May. Well I guess you’d say, what can make me feel this way? My girl (my girl, my girl)! Talkin’ ’bout my girl (my girl.)” In 1964 the song “My Girl” by the temptations became a best-selling single and rose to the top of the Billboard charts.
The song captured the idea that falling in love with that special someone could change your perspective on life. The author of Hebrews tried to capture this same idea when he reminded us that God said, “I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Kent Hughes writes, “I will be their God” (means He gives Himself to us), and “they shall be My people” (means He takes us to Himself).
When Jesus came and established a new covenant with us, He also made it possible for us to have an intimate and personal relationship with God. There is something special about the people we love being proud to claiming us as their special someone. Who is the last person that made you special by claiming you as their own? How does it make you feel about your relationship with God that He feels this way about you?
