“…believed on in the world”
1 Timothy 3:16 ESV
A HERALD IN A HURRY
A little girl was pushing the limits of her mother’s very last nerve. Mom was nearing the end of a hectic Christmas season of cooking, cleaning, shopping, wrapping and church stuff. She was also nearing the breaking point with her little pre-schooler. Finally, the little girl was bathed and ready for bed. As she knelt to say her prayers, Mom listened as her sweet three-year-old theologian “customized” her evening prayer, “…And forgive us our Christmases, as we forgive those who Christmas against us!”
We are in the last week before Christmas and many of us are in the middle of making last minute preparations to “celebrate” the birth of Christ. It could be so easy to be in such a hurry to get ready for Christmas that we miss the true meaning of Christmas. We started this week explaining the meaning of the title of the hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” One of the lyrics briefly summarizes the purpose of Jesus’ birth:
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King!”
The urgency of Christmas is that people “believe” in Jesus who was born to die for their sins. We are not promised tomorrow. We only have our time in this world to make the decision to follow Christ. Ask God to help you slow down and not miss the meaning and message of Christmas this year.
