FRIDAY, JANUARY 4
“Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner.”
Nehemiah 6:1-4 ESV
REBUILDING: ELIMINATING DISTRACTIONS
A man once walked by a building site and saw three stone masons side by side, sweating over their work in the hot sun. He asked the first, “What are you doing?” “Laying bricks” came the reply. He asked the second stone mason, “And what are you doing?” “Building a wall.” came the reply. Then he asked the third mason, “And what is it you are doing?” “I am raising a great cathedral.”
Nehemiah didn’t believe he was just laying bricks or building a wall. Nehemiah believed he was “doing a great work.” Because he believed God had called him to a great work, he wasn’t going to abandon the work even though they were persistent in an effort to distract him.
What are you doing in 2019? Are you simply laying bricks or will you be doing a “great work?” Laying bricks can be a great work if it’s what God has called you to do. Because if God has called you to do it, He has a great purpose.
