“… He stretched out His hand and touched him and said to him, ‘I will; be clean.’”
Mark 1:41 ESV
THE HEART OF NORTHSTAR: A HEART IN ACTION
A minister was being shown through a large weaving mill where one of his church members worked. Mentioning that particular employee to the foreman, the pastor said, “I suppose that John is one of your best workers.” The foreman responded, ’No, I’m sorry to say he isn’t. The trouble with John is that he stands around talking about his religion when he ought to be attending to his loom. He is a good enough fellow and has the making of a fine weaver, but he hasn’t learned yet that while he is on the job his religion ought to come out of his fingers and not out of his mouth.”
We learned yesterday that Jesus had a heart of compassion for the man with leprosy. And today we see in Mark 1:41 that Jesus did something about it. Jesus put His compassion into action and reached out and touched this man and healed him. Jesus could have easily healed the leper without touching him but I believe Jesus was making a point. No one would ever knowingly touch a leper for fear of getting the same terrible skin disease. Who knows how long it had been since anyone had touched that man. Yet, out of a heart of compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him and healed him.
It’s easy for our church to say that we have a heart for our community. It’s a completely different thing to put that heart to work. Sometimes loving on our community means being in uncomfortable places and doing and giving things that require sacrifice. However, that’s the kind of church we want to be. Pray that God would lead us to the people and projects that need to see God work through us in tangible ways this year.
