I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you… In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.

Psalm 119:11, 14 ESV

Author and Communicator Tony Campolo relayed this illustration about many believers’ approach to God’s Word. They hear it but don’t do anything about it.

Every Sunday, the ducks in a certain town waddle out of their houses down Main Street to their church. They waddle into the sanctuary and squat in their proper pews.

The duck choir waddles in and takes its place, and then the duck minister comes forward and opens the duck Bible. He reads to them: “Ducks! God has given you wings! With wings you can fly! With wings you can mount up and soar like eagles. No walls can confine you! No fences can hold you! You have wings. God has given you wings, and you can fly like birds!”

All the ducks shout, “Amen!” And then they all waddle home.

When we internalize God’s Word and allow it to work in our hearts and challenge us, we must respond. But first, we must begin with storing up God’s Word. Storing up God’s Word in our hearts is our job as believers. We do this in various ways – listening to Bible teaching, reading the Bible, memorizing verses, meditating on a passage, studying a passage, and obeying it. When we do our part in putting God’s Word into our hearts, God begins rooting out the sin that still lingers deep within us. Listen to what Hebrews 4:12 tells us about the power of God’s Word in us: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  God uses His Word to reveal what is right and wrong deep inside us and to show us what steps we should take next in our walk with Him. The Psalmist says that, over time as we understand the Bible’s value and the satisfaction it brings, it will become something we value more than an abundance of riches! How would you rate your desire to spend time alone in God’s Word on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being “I never even think about it” to 10 being “It’s the highlight of my day and wouldn’t miss it for the world!”? Tell God about how you rated yourself and ask Him to help you have a greater desire for His Word.
