“But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened,

you endured a hard struggle with sufferings,”

Hebrews 10:32 ESV

One Sunday morning the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven-year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, “Good morning Alex.” “Good morning pastor,” replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor McGhee, what is this?” Alex asked. “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was barely audible when he asked, “Which service, the 9:00 or the 11:00?”

We have plaques and memorials to remind us of significant past events that typically made an impact on our present and future situations. In an effort to encourage Christians to endure their struggles the author of Hebrews instructed them to remember when God “enlightened” them. Figuratively, enlighten means to cause something to be fully known by revealing clearly and in some detail. It means to shed light upon or to illuminate. According to Pastor Steven Cole, “Unbelievers are described in Scripture as being spiritually blind, unable to “see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2Co 4:4). Only God can command the light to shine out of darkness.”

So we can conclude, the author of Hebrews is telling us in our dark days to remember how God enlightened us with a new, godly understanding of life. When the dark days come, don’t forget what God taught you in the light. Recalling God’s work and teaching in our life on a regular basis is a great way to stay encouraged. Maintaining a prayer journal is a great way to look back and recall what God’s has taught you and done for you. Try journaling a little today, if you don’t already, and recording some things God is teaching you.

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV)
