“He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness. For the moment
all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful
fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
Hebrews 12:10-11 ESV
TRUST THE FATHER’S LOVE
We’re like the little boy that brought home a terrible report card. The next day he came back into class with a warning for the teacher. He said, “Mrs. Smith, my dad says if my grades don’t improve, somebody’s gonna get a spanking.” There are some spankings most of wish our teachers could’ve taken for us.
It wasn’t until I(Larry) was a parent that I understood what my dad meant when he said, “This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you,” as he was disciplining me. I’m still not sure that was the case every time. Some of those spankings really hurt. But I survived. However, I know that discipline was overall out of love and for my good.
There is no doubt that Jesus suffered more than I ever will when He was crucified for my sins. And there is no doubt that Jesus loves us all deeply and wants what is good for us. There will be seasons when our Heavenly Father disciplines us because He loves us. Hebrews 12:11 teaches God’s discipline produces the peaceable fruit of righteousness. In general, learning to do the right thing produces more peace in our lives.
In what ways have you sensed God disciplining you in the past? What was the fruit you believe God wanted you to experience? We should always start with God’s love for us as we process God’s work in our life. Thank God for proving His love and loving you enough to discipline you for your good.
