falls and has not another to lift him up!”
Ecclesiastes 4:10 ESV
STAYING ON YOUR FEET: FIND A RUNNING PARTNER
Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes cartoon fame gets dressed in his special clothes and lucky rocketship underpants for school. He goes to school. He sits on some bubble gum, gets beat up by a bully, fails a test at school and gets rained on the way home. At bedtime he says, “You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don’t even help.”
There are just some days when it seems nothing helps and we are going to struggle. One of the biblical solutions is to have people who are running the race of faith with you. So on those days when you stumble, and those days will come, there is someone there to help you up.
Loneliness is powerful. And loneliness can lead to a lot of bad decisions. Christian friendships isn’t nearly as much about someone telling when you’ve done something wrong as it is about having someone there to help you when you fall. You can find people to commiserate with you in just about any of the local bars. But you will have a harder time finding someone there to point you to God’s grace and mercy to get back in the race.
Who is there in your life, in Christ, to help you get back up when you fall? If there isn’t anyone in Christ, ask God to provide that person and then do your part to actively make yourself available. The body of Christ here at Northstar church has a lot of people who would like to be there to help you get up when you fall. And sometimes it takes a little effort to find the ones right for you, but they are there. Our small groups at NorthStar is a great place to start.
