“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.”
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIV
FAMILY CIRCUS: A SOLID FOUNDATION Pt. 1
Some men in a pickup truck drove into a lumberyard. One of the men walked in the office and said, “We need some four-by-twos.” The clerk asked, “You mean two-by-fours, don’t you?” The man said, “I’ll go check,” and went back to the truck. He returned and said, “Yeah, I meant two-by-four.” “All right. How long do you need them?” The customer paused for a minute and said, “I’d better go check.” After a while, the customer returned to the office and said, “A long time. We’re gonna build a house.”
When we are raising kids we are building them to last a long time. And if we are building to last a long time we must start with a solid foundation. In Deuteronomy 6 that solid foundation was an understanding of who God is. Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” This is what is known as the great Shema, the basic cry of a Jew. Shema comes from the first word, “hear”. This is to be recited by the Jews morning and evening.
Moses said teach them that there is one true God. And teach them that He desires a personal relationship with us. We are His. Building that foundation in our kids is a daily privilege and responsibility.
The Bible teaches us that God is Creator, He’s all knowing, He’s all loving, He’s holy, He’s all powerful and He’s everywhere. What are some of your favorite attributes of God? Ask you kids or someone else what their favorite thing about God is. Praise God for those attributes.
