“Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

Hebrews 13:4 ESV

A group of explorers in Africa came across some natives who for centuries had made their home on the banks of this one particular river. They showed the explorers the polluted stream that they drank from. It was filled with dirt and every contamination imaginable. The natives had developed a method of swishing over the top of the water to get the bigger chunks out before scooping it up to drink. One of the explorers took his canteen and poured out a large cup of crystal-clear water and handed it to one of the aged women of the tribe. She took the cup, pressed it to her lips, and didn’t put it down until she had drained it. Then through an interpreter she said that she had never dreamed that there was anything in this world as sweet and wonderful as that.

Much like that clean water, God’s original plan was that sex inside of marriage would be pure, good, beautiful and life-giving. Hebrews 13:4 says “the marriage bed is undefiled.” Undefiled means unpolluted, unstained or without impurities. The two extreme views at the time of this writing were people doing whatever they wanted to sexually and on the other end people teaching that sex was a bad thing all together. God says sex is pure and good inside of marriage.

In Ephesians 5:31-32, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” Becoming one flesh is a biblical way of describing sexual intercourse and its place as a symbol of the intimacy God wants with the church.

Pastor John Piper wrote, “God made us powerfully sexual so that he would be more deeply knowable. We were given the power to know each other sexually so that we might have some hint of what it will be like to know Christ supremely. Therefore, all misuses of our sexuality (adultery, fornication, illicit fantasies, masturbation, pornography, homosexual behavior, rape, sexual child abuse, bestiality, exhibitionism, and so on) distort the true knowledge of God. God means for human sexual life to be a pointer and foretaste of our relationship with him.”

How has culture maybe polluted your view of sex? Is sex honored within your marriage? If it’s not pray God would restore His intended beauty of sex in your marriage. If you’re single, pray God bring someone in your life who shares God’s view of the gift and beauty of sex inside of marriage.
