“And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as He rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As He was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of His disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’”
Luke 19:35-38 ESV
THE GREATEST RESCUE MISSION OF ALL TIME
The day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey brought mixed reactions. In some ways it was similar to the mixed reactions we experience on the last day to file our income tax returns. Many of us don’t look forward to that day. We dread seeing that final number on our do it yourself tax software saying how much we owe in incomes taxes. But there are others of us who look forward to that day because our do it yourself tax software tells us how much of a refund we are getting.
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, He was on a rescue mission. It seems that no one at the time fully understood His mission. The crowds of disciples most likely cheered because they believed He was coming to establish a physical earthly kingdom and set them free from tyrannical rule. The Pharisees were upset, most likely, because they believed Jesus wanted religious power. He was actually headed into the city to die on a cross for the sins of the world.
Both the disciples and the Pharisees misunderstood in some way what Jesus was about to do and who Jesus was. But the disciples were at least praising Jesus based on what they had seen Him do. After the resurrection they would understand better who Jesus was and what He came to do. How has your understanding of Jesus changed since you first began to learn about Him? How have you changed as a result of a greater understanding of who He is and why He came? Ask God to show you one thing you can praise Him about today.
