MONDAY, MARCH 19
“Peter answered Him, “Though they all fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” Peter said to Him, “Even if I must die with You, I will not deny You!” And all the disciples said the same.”
Matthew 26:33-35 ESV
RUNNING FROM THE TRUTH: BOASTING
When my oldest son was around 4 years old I found him standing at the top of our staircase dressed as Superman about to jump to the bottom. I stopped him and warned him that he could not safely make the jump to the bottom. He said, “I know dad that’s why I have my cape on.” In his mind, that cape gave him superpowers and he was invincible.
It is often the feeling or pride or invincibility that gets us into trouble. That’s one of the things that got the Apostle Peter into trouble. In Matthew 26, we are told that Peter boasted that he would never deny Jesus, even if everyone else did. Pastor Charles Spurgeon wrote, “Perhaps the chief reason for Peter’s denial of his Lord was his confidence in himself. If Peter had felt himself to be weaker, he would really have been stronger; but, because he felt so strong in himself, therefore he proved to be weak as water, and so denied his Master.”
Peter was one of the best of the best and if Peter could deny Jesus any of us could deny Jesus with our words or deeds. This week we will look at a few things that may lead us to running from Jesus or denying we are His followers. Make a list of some of your spiritual strengths and a list of some of your spiritual weaknesses. Ask God to help you stay humble about both lists. Ask God to guard both your strengths and weaknesses.
