TUESDAY, MAY 14
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH: THE LIES
Phineas Taylor Barnum created a show of fantastical acts that entertained millions of people. But if you were to get a backstage pass to the so-called Greatest Show on Earth, you’d find that Mr. Barnum made his money off of “white lies”, embellishments, and exploitations. Joice Heth, an elderly former slave, was one of the first people he exploited for other people’s amusement. Although slavery was outlawed in New York where he lived, he found a loophole and leased her for a year for $1,000. He paraded her around on tour as he falsely claimed that she was the 161-year-old former nurse of George Washington. After she died, he kicked his exploitations up a notch by performing a live autopsy on her to “reveal” that she was only 84 years old. The reality is a lot of The Greatest Show on Earth just wasn’t true.
Life in the Garden of Eden was really good for Adam and Eve until Satan started spreading his lies about the “good life.” For the longest time Eve was a model child of God, and everything went smoothly for her until she started listening to a “new friend”. Someone she shouldn’t have listened to. Someone who began telling her that she was missing out on life, that she’d been robbed of true contentment in her life, that God had lied to her and implied that God didn’t really want what was best for her. Eventually, she BIT into the lie.
Satan is still using the same lies today in an effort to destroy us and our families. Satan started by asking the question, “Did God actually say?” Stephanie reminded us Sunday that Satan’s lies are designed to get us to doubt God, deny God and eventually to not believe God. Satan continues to lie to us about our pain and our pleasure to get us to step away from Christ. He lies to us about our significance and our purpose. Over the next few days we will look at three specific lies of Satan.
Reflect on seasons of your life when you were not following Jesus. Can you think of any lies you were believing about God and God’s way that contributed? Are there any significant struggles that you face now that are connected to doubts you have about God? Pray now and confess those doubts and struggles to God and ask Him to show you His truth in those areas.
