“The servant girl at the door said to Peter, ‘You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’”
JOHN 18:17 ESV
RUNNING FROM THE TRUTH: BULLIES
Calvin of the Calvin and Hobbs cartoon fame gets dressed in his special clothes for school. He goes to school. He sits on some bubble gum, gets beat up by a bully, fails a test at school and gets rained on walking home. At bedtime he says, “You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don’t help.” Most of us know that feeling all too well. The feeling of everything going wrong that can go wrong.
The night of Jesus betrayal and arrest in the garden must have felt like one of those days to His followers. Just hours before the Apostle Peter had proclaimed his undying devotion to Jesus. Now, he is intimidated by a servant girl into denying that he is a follower of Jesus. When the servant girl asked Peter if he was a follower of Jesus, she asked it in a way as to expect a negative answer. It’s like people asking, “You’re not one of those Jesus freaks are you?” Just hours before Peter was ready to take on 500 Roman soldiers with his pocket knife. Now he wasn’t ready for the pressure of a servant girl asking him if He was a Christian.
The people and things that intimidate us into denying our faith sometimes aren’t always the big giant bullies of temptations. Sometimes it’s the small unexpected compromises or indiscretions. Can you think of family, friends or coworkers who belittle your faith and almost pressure you to minimize how important Jesus is to you? Confess the pressure you feel from them to Jesus. Ask God to give you the strength to be loyal to Him in the face of the big and little bullies the enemy sends our way.
