“And there came a man named Jairus…”

Luke 8:41 ESV

STRONG DADS SEEK JESUS PERSONALLY

Recently a well-known televangelist was caught by a reporter getting off his private jet and getting into a waiting car. The reporter took the opportunity to ask the televangelist what he meant when he compared flying commercial to getting in “a long tube with a bunch of demons.” The televangelist denied saying that but made other comments explaining how difficult it would be to talk to Jesus surrounded by so many sinners.

In Luke 8 we are reminded that Jesus came to be around sinners and to rescue sinners. In the crowd that eagerly awaited and surrounded Jesus that day was a man who desperately wanted to be near Jesus. Pastor Mike reminded us yesterday that strong men pursue a personal relationship with Jesus very similar to the way Jairus sought Jesus.

John MacArthur points out that “Unlike most religious leaders in Israel, who avoided the common people so as not to be defiled by them, Jesus secluded Himself only occasionally to rest, to give further insight and instruction to His disciples, or to spend time alone in communion with the Father. Apart from such occasions, His entire ministry was spent in public, mingling daily with the people in town and village streets, the fields, along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and wherever else they gathered. (MacArthur New Testament Commentary – Luke 6-10)

It’s not always popular when a man decides he wants to accept God’s invitation to know Him personally. But when it comes to our own salvation and to raising kids, popularity is not the measure of success. Experiencing the life that only God can give and helping our kids experience the life that God offers is more important. We come to Jesus at a one-time event for our salvation. But we have the opportunity to come to Him every day for wisdom, peace and direction. Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Are you taking advantage of that opportunity to come daily?
