“he implored Him [Jesus] to come to his house…”

Luke 8:41 ESV

A family went to dine at a restaurant and their six-year-old boy was asked to say the blessing. As they bowed their heads, he said, “God is great. God is good. Thank you for this food. And I would even thank you more, God, if Mom bought us some ice cream after dinner with liberty and justice for all. Amen.” This brought several chuckles from other customers, and also one strong remark from an older woman seated nearby, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why I never!”

Tears welled up in the little boy’s eyes as he exclaimed, “Did I do something wrong? Is God mad at me?” The mother reassured him that he had done nothing wrong and that he had done a great job as an elderly gentleman walked up and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer!” “Really?” asked the little boy. “Cross my heart,” answered the man and with a sly grin nodding toward the woman, “Too bad she never asks for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

Nothing we ask God is too big for God and nothing we ask God is too little for Him. Philippians 4:6 teaches, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” God invites us to pray about everything, even ice cream.

Prayer is simply talking to God. In Luke 8:41 Jairus talks to Jesus and begs him to come to his house. When our kids are hurting we all pray differently.  Pastor Mike reminded us on Sunday that strong dads pray. Many of us have worked very hard to be where we are in life and sometimes it’s only when we face a challenge that is bigger than us that we turn to God. But Jesus wants an ongoing relationship and conversation with us. So, yes, take the big stuff too Him but don’t forget to talk about the small stuff.

Take some time and talk to God about your day. If your day is just getting started talk to Him about setting your agenda. If your day is ending review your day with Him and ask God for His thoughts.

Sundays: 9:30 & 11:00AM
