“How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding.”
Proverbs 3:13 ESV
Emily loved the New York Times crossword puzzles. Her boyfriend Bill wanted a unique way to propose to her. So he enlisted the help of crossword composer Will Short. On the appointed day, Bill took Emily to breakfast. He read the sports section while she started filling in her puzzle. Soon she began to notice some amazing “coincidences.” “Bill,” she said, “My name is in here.” Then, “Your name is in here too!” Soon phrases like “a modest proposal” and “Will you marry me?” emerged. Emily looked at Bill in astonishment. And she said yes.
The Bible may seem like a puzzle to us at times. We struggle through it, hoping to find wisdom for life’s questions. Solomon understood that struggle. But he knew the search for wisdom was well worth it. He wrote, “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her” (Proverbs 3:13-15). In the Bible, God talks to us–and about us. Persistent, prayerful study produces great personal rewards. So take time to search the Word. You’ll discover the treasures of God’s wisdom. –HWR
The word “optimize” means to make the best or most effective use of (a situation, opportunity, or resource). As it relates to the study this week we are asking how we can make the best use of wisdom. Proverbs 3:13 teaches us that when we use wisdom we get blessings. The word “blessing” comes from the same word we get the word happiness but it means more than happiness. Blessing also involves the idea of lasting satisfaction and joy beyond our current circumstances.
This week as we dig deeper into God’s definition of wisdom you should know that God wants to bless your life. As we seek out God’s wisdom the bible promises blessings will flow. Seeking God’s wisdom takes a decision and effort on our part. Proverbs 3:14 says when we find wisdom “the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold.” Take some time today and read about other blessings wisdom has to offer in Proverbs 3:13-27.
