OPTIMIZE MY WORK: WHY WORK MATTERS
Aleida Huissen, 78, of Rotterdam, Netherlands, had been smoking for 50 years. And for 50 years she had been trying to give up her harmful habit. But she had not been successful until something changed. She has now given up cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. The secret? Leo Jansen, 79, proposed marriage, but refused to go through with the wedding until Aleida gave up smoking. Says Aleida now: “Will power never was enough to get me off the tobacco habit. Love did it.”
Love is an amazing motivator. Love is willing to work hard and do what it takes. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus gives us two loving reasons why we should work. The first reason is so others can see the “light” of our work. And secondly the purpose of them seeing the light of our work is so we can glorify God. All of this flows from the two greatest commandments which are basically to love God and love others.
God loves us so much that He specially designed us and a plan for each of our lives. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” If I love God I will want others to love Him too. And one of the ways I can point others to God is by walking in the “works” God has prepared for me to do. Allowing your love for God and love for others to be the primary motivator of work is a game changer.
Do you see your current career or education path as a way to show God you love Him? Do you see your work ethic as a way to show others how good you believe God is? Take some time and talk to God about being “His workmanship” and about the “good works” He has for you.
