“The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.”
Luke 15:16 (NLT2)
LIES THAT LEAD US AWAY FROM HOME: THE WAYS OF THE WORLD WILL SATISFY
A man bought a new hunting dog. Eager to see how he would perform, he took him out to track a bear. No sooner had they gotten into the woods than the dog picked up the trail. Suddenly he stopped, sniffed the ground, and headed in a new direction. He had caught the scent of a deer that had crossed the bear’s path. A few moments later he halted again, this time smelling a raccoon that had crossed the path of the deer. Then a turkey, a rabbit, and so on, until finally the breathless hunter caught up with his dog, only to find him barking triumphantly down the hole of a field mouse.
The dog illustrates how easily we can become distracted. They started chasing a big bear and ended up chasing a small mouse. In Luke 15 the younger son left the father’s house because he was not satisfied with the life his father was providing. He left with big dreams of how he would spend his inheritance. He ended up in a place that pig food looked satisfying to him.
There are times when doing things God’s way may not seem the easiest or the most satisfying. But Jesus promises that ultimately God’s way will satisfy. In John 4:13-14 Jesus said to a woman at a well, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Dig a little deeper today by reading John 4:1-42. As you read ask God to show you at least one important principle for your life today about finding satisfaction.
