THURSDAY, APRIL 5
Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.
John 19:14 ESV
FREED BY THE TRUTH: HIS INNOCENCE
A husband and wife were preparing to have breakfast when the wife asked, “Why do I always have to make the coffee?” The husband answered, “Because you’re the wife; that’s your job.” The wife replied, “Well, the Bible doesn’t say it’s the women’s job to make the coffee; it’s the man’s!” Taken aback by this, the husband demanded to see where in the Bible it states that he should be the one to make the coffee. “Well here it is,” the wife replied, “Hebrews!!” In some households, preparing to make the coffee is more of a process than actually making the coffee!
This week we have been looking at the events preparing for the crucifixion of Jesus as it relates to Barabbas. While all of this is happening, the priest is preparing for Passover. Passover was the time when a spotless lamb was prepared to be sacrificed as an act symbolizing the payment of the sins of the people. This is no coincidence. Jesus was the fulfilment of the symbolic sacrificial system. Even this mock trial and the exchange of Jesus for Barabbas was part of God’s plan and God’s preparation. Again, we are reminded of the teaching in Revelation 13:8 that Jesus was the lamb who was slain from the foundation of the earth.
God had been preparing to save us and set us free since time began. Even when things seem out of control God is still in control and still at work. Thank God for doing work necessary to make salvation possible. Ask God what areas of your life He is doing preparatory work in right now.
