“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”
Luke 15:20 (NLT2)
COMING HOME: THE FATHER RAN FILLED WITH LOVE
Yesterday we talked about the father running to meet his wayward son. But Jesus wants us to know how the father ran. He ran “filled with love.” When you think about someone being filled with love, what kind of images or relationships come to mind? Perhaps a mother holding her newborn for the very first time? Or maybe a couple celebrating an anniversary with a perfect sunset dinner overlooking the Caribbean? Whatever image comes to mind, it must be an unquestionably positive and moving one.
There once was a lonely frog looking for love who went to see a fortune-teller. He was told not to worry. She said, “You’re going to meet a beautiful young girl, and she will want to know everything about you.” “That’s great!” the excited frog said. “When will I meet her?” And the psychic said, “Next semester…in biology class.”
When we meet Jesus, we find out He has nothing but love for us. Fortunately, He’s not going to dissect us. Remember, Jesus is providing word pictures in Luke 15 to illustrate why He has been spending time with “sinners and tax collectors.” So, one of those pictures teaches us that Jesus is filled with love for people who are far from home.
When a glass is filled with water there is no room for anything else. If God is filled with love for us there is no room for anything else. Write down some of the ways you’ve experienced God’s heart full of love for you.
