“As you come to Him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 2:4, 5 (ESV)

Years ago I went to my visit my friend Casey’s parent’s house.  Casey had lived there all his life.  Proud parents showed me lots of old memorabilia.  When we entered the kitchen, all up and down the doorpost were lots of marks and lots of dates with lots of names.  They names were the names of special friends and family.  The marks were the place where the tops of the heads of all these people met the doorpost.  And the dates were to track their growth over the years.

For years this family had made it a priority to track their growth. And when Peter was encouraging the early church in 1 Peter 2 he reminded them they were still in process and still growing. Peter writes, “you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house.” And much like walking onto a construction site, it doesn’t always look pretty at first. But the good news is the construction isn’t finished.

God doesn’t expect perfection from any of us as long as we are here on earth. But He continues to show us grace and mercy for the purpose of building us up spiritually. So it is spiritually that we should be growing and be able to observe that growth. If we had a spiritual doorpost for your life, would you be able to track any measurable growth lately? Where are some of the ways that you have grown over the last year? Thank God for the process.
