“Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”
1 Peter 2:10 (NLT2)
THE NEW ME: I’M ETERNALLY LOVED
One night before bed, when one of my kids was younger, she was overly tired, being overly dramatic and didn’t want to go to bed. She began to whine and say, “Nobody in this family even loves me.” At that point I jokingly told her I was going to need her to get out of that bed because only kids I love get to stay in my bed. I also told her she was going to need to give me back all of her clothes and pajamas because only kids that I loved were allowed to wear the clothes that I bought. And finally, I told her she was going to need to leave and go outside the house because only kids that I loved were allowed to stay in my house. She got the point and laid down quietly with a grin on her face.
In 1 Peter 2:10, Peter reminds the church that they are eternally loved and they belong to God’s family. We were all created with a need to belong. Most of us have a “tribe” of people close to us who share some similar interests or life stations with us. When we don’t have that “tribe” to whom we feel like we belong, we tend to struggle with our identity and sense of self worth.
God solved the problem of self worth when He gave us an eternal place in His family. And with that eternal place in His family come some benefits just like my kids get benefits from being a loved member of my family. What are some of the benefits you are biblically promised as a result of being in God’s family? Thank God for those benefits in prayer.
