“You are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:14 (ESV)
YOU ARE PART OF GOD’S UNIVERSAL PURPOSE
This story comes from Reggie McNeal: I was sitting on a bench on a beach boardwalk late one afternoon, resting after an hour walk. I had passed a woman in a green uniform pushing a broom several times. She came toward my bench doing her meticulous sweeping of the sidewalk. Suddenly she stopped, wiped her forehead, and rested on her broom. I called out to her: “You do a great job.” “Thank you,” she replied. Then she added something that explained why the sidewalk behind her was spotless. “I just believe people want to walk on a clean sidewalk.”
I was humbled to be in the presence of a worker who viewed her task with such significance. Whatever the park service was paying her, there’s no way they could have demanded the excellence she brought to her work. (Reggie McNeal, The Present Future)
No matter where you go in the world a broom has the same primary purpose and that purpose is to sweep. No matter how far you go back in history that primary purpose hasn’t changed. But just because that’s the purpose of the broom it doesn’t mean that is what the broom is being used for. And no matter how far you go back in time God has had the same purpose for every human being. That purpose is to know God and to make God known. Some people embrace that purpose with passion and excellence, much like the woman sweeping in the story above. And some people don’t embrace the purpose for which they were created.
Jesus made it clear in Matthew 5:16 that we were made to give glory to our Father in heaven. The word glory is associated with beauty, fame or achievement. We give glory to God when we show others the beautiful things God has achieved in us and through us. What are some of the beautiful things God has done in you and through you? Ask God to open your eyes to other beautiful things He wants to do in you and through you today.
