“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 ESV
WONDER: KINDNESS INVOLVES FORGIVENESS
In the movie “Wonder,” Auggie tells his mom what the principle had to say: “Mr. Tushman went out of his way to tell me how sweet those kids were and that Julian is apparently quite the dream.” She responds, “No. Not a dream? Is he one of those kids that acts one way in front of grownups and then another way in front of kids?” Auggie says, “Yeah, I guess.” Auggie’s mom wisely tells him, “Well I know it’s hard, but you have to understand that he probably feels badly about himself. And when someone acts small, you just have to be the bigger person, alright?”
Jesus knows what it is like to have people mistreat you. Jesus has also led the way in modeling how to forgive people who have hurt us. The Bible challenges us in Ephesians 4:32 to show the same kindness and forgiveness that Jesus has shown us when it comes to dealing with others.
It is not always easy to be the “bigger person.” It’s especially not easy when we’ve been hurt personally. But it is at those moments that we have the opportunity to be most like Christ. It is difficult for someone without Christ to understand how we could forgive someone who doesn’t deserve to be forgiven. But because we have experienced the unmerited forgiveness of God we know the joy and freedom it brings to share that forgiveness with others. Ask God if there is any unforgiveness in your heart that needs to be dealt with. Ask Him to give you the grace you need to offer forgiveness where it needs to be extended.
