“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:12-13 ESV
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: HOW YOU LOVE
It is said that Cyrus, the founder of the Persian Empire, once had captured a prince and his family. When they came before him, the monarch asked the prisoner, “What will you give me if I release you?” “The half of my wealth,” was his reply. “And if I release your children?” “Everything I possess.” “And if I release your wife?” “Your Majesty, I will give myself.” Cyrus was so moved by his devotion that he freed them all. As they returned home, the prince said to his wife, “Wasn’t Cyrus a handsome man!” With a look of deep love for her husband, she said to him, “I didn’t notice. I could only keep my eyes on you-the one who was willing to give himself for me.”
Sacrifice plays a huge role in the relationships portrayed in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. From Belle sacrificing her freedom and taking her father’s place as the Beast’s castle prisoner to the Beast sacrificing his happiness and letting Belle go take care of her sick father, the classic movie is an endless tale of people sacrificing their own needs for the good of others.
The ultimate display of love is that of Jesus giving up His life for the sins of the world. The Bible says there is no greater love than giving up your life for someone else. There are times when loves requires giving up something of value. It may be time, money, or personal preferences that are first sacrificed for the greater good.
Do you think you love your spouse sacrificially? How do you think God feels about your sacrifice? Sacrificial love is an overflow of God living inside of us. Ask God to empower you to love your spouse and others in a sacrificial way when necessary.
