“Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.”
Acts 16:30-33 ESV
MISSION POSSIBLE: A DAD WHO LEADS BY EXAMPLE
Adam Sandler was promoting his album “SHHH… DON’T TELL” on MTV and during the interview he said this: “I think I curse more on this record than ever before. Yeah, the album’s not too tame. In real life, though, I’m a little tamer at home. My wife yells at me for that ’cause we’re gonna have a kid and I guess I can’t curse. I’m in trouble when my kids grows up and one of his friends goes, ’Hey, listen to your dad’s album.’ I’m dead. There’s no way I could win a fight with that kid. ‘You did this! And you did that!’ And I’d be like, ’eh… eh… you win.’”
Some of us remember hearing a parent say, “Do as I say not as I do.” That was never a very convincing argument. In Acts 16, we find a family who “did as the dad did.” In Acts 16 a philippian jailer witnessed the miracle of Paul and Silas being set free from prison and he immediately wanted to be saved. He saw God work and wanted God in his life. Then the jailer’s family saw the work of God in the dad’s life and they wanted to be saved.
Jesus taught in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” What is one good thing your dad modeled? Thank God for that one thing. Who do you think is watching your example? Pray God would help your light shine in such a way that they see Christ in you and want to follow Jesus more closely.
helping you become a mature Christ follower? What’s one spiritual discipline you would like to impart to your kids or see grow in your own life?
