“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45 ESV

A site foreman had ten very lazy men working for him, so one day he decided to trick them into doing some work for a change. “I’ve got a really easy job today for the laziest one among you,” he announced. “Will the laziest man please put his hand up?” Nine hands went up. “Why didn’t you put your hand up?” he asked the tenth man. “Too much trouble,” came the reply.

There is an expression that is common in many struggling homes that goes something like this, “He/she won’t even lift a single finger to help me.” A marriage is in trouble when someone feels like they are doing all the work. Yet, Jesus taught that He was leading by example in the area of service. He washed the disciple’s feet and ultimately died on the cross as an act of service.

We set ourselves up for frustration and disappointment when we sit around expecting others to serve us. We frustrate the people we are in a relationship with when we are the ones who won’t lift a finger to help. Part of God’s “secret sauce” for a healthy relationship is to “serve one another.” Galatians 5:13 teaches, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Jesus has freed us to serve one another. Ask God to show you one way you can serve someone today.
