“‘While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You’. …Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.”
Jonah 2:7, 10 NASB
WHALE LIFE: GOD’S COMEBACKS
A boy’s boat went out of reach on the pond one day and started floating away. A man on the side started throwing rocks at the boat and the boy became horrified at what might happen. But then he realized that the rocks were going over the boat and making ripples. Finally, the boat was pushed back to shore and into the boy’s hands.
Comeback stories are usually pretty messy and involve moments where we aren’t sure the person is actually going to make it back. In Jonah 2, God was “throwing rocks” toward Jonah to bring him back. Jonah was in a terrible storm, then thrown overboard, nearly drowned, swallowed by a giant fish, spent three days in that fish and was ultimately “vomited” back up on dry land. Finally, Jonah cried out to God and God told the fish “that’s enough.”
The prophet Micah wrote, “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.” (Micah 7:18, NIV) God delights in showing mercy. God delights in comeback stories. Do you have a comeback story? If so, share it with someone today who may need to hear about God’s mercy. Do you need a comeback story? If so, cry out to God like Jonah and ask God to give you one.
