“Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time,”
Jonah 3:1 NASB
A PATIENT MESSAGE
Three retirees, each with a hearing loss, were taking a walk one fine March day. One remarked to the other, “Windy, ain’t it?” “No,” the second man replied, “It’s Thursday.” And the third man chimed in, “So am I. Let’s have a coke.”
God’s word came to Jonah “a second time.” You often have to repeat yourself when you are talking to people with hearing problems. Jonah didn’t have a hearing problem. Jonah had an obedience problem. And after 3 days in a whale, Jonah was ready to obey. And God was also willing to repeat Himself. God didn’t stop talking to Jonah just because Jonah didn’t obey the first time.
Because God loves us He is patient. God has repeatedly sent us love messages and the greatest message is Jesus Himself. God offers renewed opportunities to those who fail to profit by the first opportunity; and it may be even opportunities of the same kind.
There may have been seasons and times in your life when you disobeyed what God asked you to do. And you may have felt like God was done with you and didn’t want to talk to you anymore. But Jonah reminds us that God is patient and gives us second chances to hear from Him. The first time Jonah heard God, he arose to flee. The second time Jonah arose and went where God wanted him to go. Things would have been much easier for Jonah had he obeyed the “first time” God spoke. What will you do the next time God speaks to you?
