“He issued a proclamation and it said, ‘In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water. But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish.’”

Jonah 3:7-9 NASB

A young couple just had a newborn baby, and the time came when the baby needed a diaper change. The mother was not able to change the baby so she asked her husband, who was a minor league ball player, if he would change the baby. He told her he did not know how. A couple of hours later a situation arose, again she asked if her husband would change the baby. Again, he told her, “All I know is baseball, I cannot change the baby.” The young mother thought –How can I communicate this in a way that he will understand?

Sure enough, it was time to change the baby again. She made the request and he gave the same reply. However, this time she told him, “Changing a baby is much like baseball; You lay the diaper out like a diamond, place the baby on the middle of the diaper. This is the pitcher’s mound. You take first base and pull it over to third base and you pin that together. You take second base and slide that into home and the baby is changed. In case of rain, the game is not delayed. You simply start all over again.”

In the book of Jonah it was time for a change in Nineveh. And God used the message of Jonah to be the catalyst for the change. When the king of Nineveh heard the message, he called a prayer meeting and for genuine actions of humility and repentance.

Much like a dirty diaper, sin can make our lives messy and stinky. And when God’s message really speaks to our hearts we realize and desire a change. We don’t change our own lives and then come to God. God’s message draws us in and changes us. Can you think of specific ways God’s word has cleaned up and changed your life? If your life has never been changed, maybe God is speaking to you now and telling you He wants to change you. Confess your sins and confess your faith in what Jesus did on the cross for you. Ask God to change your life right now.
