“When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.”
Jonah 3:10 NASB
AN UNCHANGING MESSAGE
A young lady who occasionally walked through the park after work, stopped to have her picture taken by a photographer. She was very excited about her picture being taken. As she walked out of the park, she looked at the picture in dissatisfaction. She turned and headed back to the cameraman. When she got there she vented, “This is not right! This is not right! You have done me no justice!” The witty photographer looked at the picture and looked at her. “Miss, you don’t need justice, what you need is mercy.”
In Jonah 3:10, God showed mercy to the town of Nineveh. The Bible says God, “relented concerning the calamity which He had declared.” God decided to hold back His judgment in response to the people’s repentance. Some would argue that God changed His mind. But, God didn’t change His mind. God has always and will always show mercy to anyone who repents. This will never change because God never changes.
None of us really want what we deserve for our sin. What we need is God’s mercy for our sin. And God delights in showing us mercy. Thank God for His unchanging offer of mercy. Is there an area of your life that needs to feel God’s unchanging mercy? What actions could you take that would show genuine repentance?
