“we do not lose heart.”

2 Corinthians 4:1 ESV

If you are a fan of Georgia sports, we have been on the wrong side of teams not giving up in recent years. In the College Football Championship, Alabama did not give up when they were down 13-0 at halftime against the Georgia Bulldogs. In the Super Bowl last year, when the Patriots faced a 4th and 3 at their own 46 yard line down 28-3 with 6:04 left in the third quarter, they seemed absolutely dead in the water. But they did not give up much to the dismay of us Falcons fans.

Twice in 2 Corinthians 4 the apostle Paul used the phrase “we do not lose heart.”  The New Living Translation translates this phrase “never give up.” The Apostle Paul and many other believers were being pressed in many different directions and could have easily been persuaded to give up. But the Paul refused to give up and as a result, saw many more spiritual victories.

Certain seasons of life are more difficult than others and there are times when we all may be tempted to quit. Sooner or later, suffering touches us all. It may be personal pain, the loss of a mate, a debilitating illness or a financial disaster. It may be the pain of someone we’re close to, a friend or loved one whose grief leaves us groping for words of comfort. But as long as we have breath, God is not finished and there are still spiritual victories to be won. The key to not losing heart is focusing on God’s power and God’s bigger plan. Talk to God about the areas of your where you are being tempted to give up or give in. Ask God for the power not to quit.
