“After three days they found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.”
Luke 2:46-47 ESV
THE MISSION OF CHRISTMAS: SEARCHING
Walt Disney World has branded itself as the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Well, the happiest place on earth became the scariest place on the earth the night we (Larry) lost my 6-year-old daughter in the crowd. It was dark, there were people everywhere and she was nowhere in sight. We immediately began frantically searching and calling out for her. We found her a few minutes later, but that few minutes seemed like forever in that moment. I know how Mary felt when she said to Jesus, “Your father and I have been searching for You in great distress.” Most parents know the feeling of panic that sets in when you can’t find your children.
Once Mary and Joseph realized Jesus was missing, it took them 3 days to find Him. The irony of Mary and Joseph searching for Jesus was that Jesus, in fact, had come to earth to search for us. Later, Luke would record the words and mission of Jesus in Luke 19:10 where Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Mary sought for Jesus in “great distress.” And Jesus came to the earth searching for us because we are all in “great distress” without His sacrificial death for our sins and His resurrection.
Great distress can come in so many different forms. Sometimes distress is the result of our poor choices, sometimes it’s the fallout from other people’s poor choices and sometimes it’s just the result of living in an imperfect world that has been greatly affected by sin and the fall of man. Jesus came on a mission to seek and save us from the great distress caused by sin. What is the biggest cause of distress in your life? Whatever it is, Jesus knows, cares and came to do something about it. Thank Jesus for seeking you out. Talk to Him about whatever is causing distress in your heart. Ask Him what His solution is for you.
