“For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”
2 Chronicles 20:12 ESV
THE PROBLEM WITH PRAISE
A patient was waiting nervously in the examination room of a famous specialist. “So who did you see before coming to me?” asked the proud doctor. The patient answered, “My local General Practitioner.” “Your GP?” scoffed the doctor. “What a waste of time! Tell me, what sort of useless advice did he give you?” “He told me to come and see you.”
Some of the most important decisions we ever make are where to turn when we feel overwhelmed and need help. In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat and the nation of Judah were about to be attacked by three different nations who were only about 20 miles away. It was at this moment that Jehoshaphat lead his nation to seek God and praise Him in the face of their approaching conflict. By God’s grace, they were able to praise in the middle of their problem.
Can you remember the last time you felt “powerless” against your problem? The best advice any specialist will every give you in those situations is to start by turning your eyes on God. If you were to rewrite 2 Chronicles 20:12 for your life, what would be the problem? Fill in the blank, “For I am powerless against this ________________.” Follow the example of Jehoshaphat by confessing your feeling of powerlessness to God and turning your eyes to Him. Now get ready to see God’s power at work in your powerless situation.
