“since you have given Him authority over all flesh,
to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him”
John 17:2 ESV
Dr. Horatius Bonar, as he drew the curtains at night and retired to rest, used to repeat to himself the words, as if in prayer, and certainly with expectancy, “Perhaps tonight, Lord!” In the morning, as he awoke and looked out on the dawn of a new day, he would say, looking up into the sky. “Perhaps today, Lord!” He expected the Lord to return at any moment. —A. Jesus’ concern was that this “hour” of crucifixion be used to give people eternal life. Don’t let anybody tell you that when you die you just go out of existence. Or, you go to sleep. As the Bible tells us, God has put the idea of eternity into the heart of mankind. Our enemy wants us to disregard the reality of judgment and just focus on the here and now.
We should live with eternity in mind. We should make choices about sin and righteousness considering the truth that every person will be judged for the works that they have done. If you have placed your faith in Christ, God the Father has given you to Jesus for eternity. Thank God for the hope of heaven. Ask God to help you remember in the struggle that our time here on earth is only temporary.
