“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
John 15:15 ESV
GOD TALKS TO US LIKE FRIENDS
Many of us remember the iconic theme song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from the movie Toy Story. Andy and Woody sang about the importance of their friendship with the words, “You’ve got a friend in me. When the road looks rough ahead. And you’re miles and miles from your nice warm bed. You just remember what your old pal said, “Boy, you’ve got a friend in me.”
We have already mentioned that John 15 is Jesus’ farewell speech to His disciples. One of the things He wanted to affirm with them was His friendship. He was not only going to be “miles” away, He was going to be another world away. The Greek word translated “friend” literally means, “a friend at court.” It describes that “inner circle” around a king or emperor. In John 3:29, it describes the “best man” at a wedding. The “friends of the king” would be close to him and know his secrets, but they would also be subject to him and have to obey his commands.
A good friend is someone you can tell anything. One of the reasons we can “Win the Day” today is because Jesus tells us everything we need to know because of our relationship with Him. Who in your life can you tell just about anything? What are the things that have strengthened that relationship? Do you talk to them about your relationship with Christ? Do you talk to Jesus about everything that’s important to you? Do you go to His Word when you need advice? Pray to God like you would talk to a friend today.
