“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13 ESV

WE WIN WHEN LOVE HAS NO LIMITS

During the reign of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), there was a shortage of currency in the British Empire. Representatives carefully searched the nation in hopes of finding silver to meet the emergency. After one month, the committee returned with its report. “We have searched the Empire in vain seeking to find silver. To our dismay, we found none anywhere except in the cathedrals where the statues of the saints are made of choice silver.” To this, Oliver Cromwell eloquently answered, “Let’s melt down the saints and put them into circulation.”

Jesus gave His life to show His love for us and to save us. There has never been a greater gift of love than our sinless Savior dying for a world of sinners. He gave everything. When soldiers die in the line of duty we often say, “They made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Jesus wants His followers to be generous in their love. We most likely won’t be called upon to die physically as an expression of love for those around us. However, when we believe everything we have is a gift from God, we are so much more likely to use anything and everything we have for others to experience His love. Do you need to be “melted down and put into circulation?”

“By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:16-18 ESV
