3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Christ Died for our Sins
Verses 3-4 begin Paul’s explicit statement of the gospel. This message, he tells us in verse 3, is of “first importance” (protos-πρώτοις), and it is the message that he received and now is passing down to his audience. This is the most important message in the world. The Bible is 66 books but the gospel is 10 words:
(1)Christ (2)died (3)for (4)our (5)sins (6)AND (7)rose (8)from (9)the (10)dead.
Let’s take a closer look at words 1-5.
Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. We understand that in all of us in our own way, have turned from God’s way to our own way. Instead of representing God, we chose to rival Him. Instead of worshipping God, we’ve chosen to worship self. We have all sinned. There is no one except from its far-reaching effects. The world is not as it should be!
Romans 6:23 states, “For the wages of sin is death…” Our sin, our rebellion against God has earned us death, has earned us separation from God now and for eternity. This separation from our source and sustainer is the cause of the evil and brokedness we see all around us. We find ourselves in quite a predicament, we are all sinners and our sin has earned us death and separation from God.
Romans 5:8 states, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” God so loved us, that He died for us even while we were still sinners. Jesus Christ, the sinless one, who had no sin to die for, chose to die for your sin and for my sin. He paid the debt of sin, so that we would be free to know God and make God known for eternity.
This is the gospel: Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.
