“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you.”
John 20:21 (ESV)
FIRST WORDS: I CAN GIVE YOU PURPOSE
After a few weeks of sheltering in place many of us are desperately missing our barbers and hair stylist. I read this week about a woman in dire need of a beauty makeover. She went to her salon with a fashion magazine photo of a gorgeous, young, lustrous-haired model, showed the stylist the trendy new cut she wanted and settled into the chair. The stylist began humming a catchy tune and got to work on the woman’s thin, graying hair. She was delighted by the stylist’s cheerful attitude until she recognized the melody. It was the theme from “Mission: Impossible.” The longer we have to shelter in place the more our hair may look like an impossible mission.
Jesus’ first words to the disciples after His resurrection were words of peace. And now He is sending us on the same mission He was on which was to help people find peace through a relationship with Him. The good news is that this is not an impossible mission. It is very possible if we live out the two greatest commandments.
In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” If we simply love God and love people it will open up doors to share with others how they can have a peaceful loving relationship with God. It’s very difficult as a Christian to love and care about someone and to not want them to have the same peace with God that we have found. List the names of at least 3 people you know who don’t have peace with God. Ask God how you can introduce them into a loving relationship with Him.
