And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
Acts 17:11 (NLT)
UPSTREAM: STAY ANCHORED TO SCRIPTURE
After a physical examination, a man said, “Tell me in plain language, Doc, what’s really the matter with me?” “Do you want it straight? “Yes.” “Well, there isn’t a thing wrong with you except that you’re just plain lazy!” “Okay,” drawled the listless patient, “now give me the medical excuse for it so I can tell my boss!”
In Acts 17, the noble Bereans carefully “searched the Scriptures day after day.” The word “searched” is similar to a careful examination of the evidence and facts in order to reach a reasonable conclusion. The Bereans concluded that the gospel Paul proclaimed was the truth that fulfilled Old Testament promises. This commitment to biblical truth was an anchor that helped keep them on course in their faith.
Mike reminded us that in our downstream culture, we need to make sure we don’t get swept downstream by worldly thinking and new ideas that don’t align with the truth of Scripture. Are you eager to hear the Word of God? How important is Scripture to you based on the amount of time you spend reading and memorizing it? How has the Bible been an anchor for you in cultural storms?
Thank God for the unchanging truths that are found in the Bible. Ask God to grow your desire to know and live out His Word.
