“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT2)
THE POWER OF PRAYER: UNDERSTAND
This peace comes from God. This peace is also bigger than anything we can understand. The phrase “exceeds anything we can understand” literally means it surpasses anything we can comprehend. God can give us peace when it doesn’t seem like anyone should be able to have peace in that situation. No one can really understand how someone surrounded by challenges can live with the peace of God in his soul! Who can understand this great promise?
On Sunday we learned the key was to treasure Jesus above everything else. Paul added “as you live in Christ.” The Bible doesn’t teach that Christians won’t have problems in this life. But the Bible does promise we can have peace in the midst of the problems. If you know Jesus and you know Jesus is near and you confidently trust your God in the midst of any trial, you can have a peace that passes understanding.
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:27 (NASB) Author Warren Wiersbe comments, “The world bases its peace on its resources, while God’s peace depends on relationships.” Thank God for your relationship with Him. Talk about the quality of that relationship and ways you can get to know Him better.
