Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life.
Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.”
John 11:25 (NLT2)
JESUS IS THE LIFE
As a young man, D.L. Moody was called upon suddenly to preach a funeral sermon. He hunted throughout the four Gospels trying to find one of Christ’s funeral sermons but searched in vain. He found that Christ broke up every funeral he ever attended. Death could not exist where he was. When the dead heard his voice, they sprang to life. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life.”
In John 11, Jesus arrives just in time to preach a funeral sermon for Lazarus. However, this funeral sermon was a lesson on the person of Christ and the resurrection of Lazarus. Jesus explains to Martha that He is “the resurrection and the life.” We’ve learned in this sermon series that “I AM” is Jesus’ claim to deity and self-existence. Believing in Jesus is not a belief in a theology; it’s a belief in a person. Martha’s thinking about an event. Jesus says no, look at Me a person, see. Salvation doesn’t come in a system, and it doesn’t come in religion, and it doesn’t come in a code, it comes in a living person, Jesus Christ, who is resurrection and life.
Jesus doesn’t just give life; He is life. In John 1:4, it reads, “In Him was life.” Jesus put it this way in John 14:19, “Because I live, you also will live.” In what ways do you believe you benefit from Jesus’ promise to give life to those who believe?
Thank God for the life-giving promises and benefits you have in Christ. Thank God that funerals are not the end of the story for believers.
