and [the believers] began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
Acts 2:4 (NLT2)
THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS US FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY
A preacher was going to preach on the wind being an emblem of the Spirit of God, and he said, “Who really would know the most about the wind?” And, he said, “I know who I’ll talk to. There’s an old sea captain down here, and he sails by the winds, one of those old schooners.” And, he went down, and he talked to him. He said, “Captain, tell me everything you know about the wind.” He thought he was going to get a long speech, but the captain said, “To tell you the truth, I know very little about the wind. It’s so mysterious.” But, he did say, “I’ll tell you what I do know: I know how to set my sails.” And, I thought, “Oh God,” when I heard that, “that’s what I want. I don’t want to be able to understand the Holy Spirit. Who can? But, I want to know how to set my sails when the wind of God’s Spirit blows.” Thank God for that wind. (Adrian Rogers)
The Holy Spirit filled the sails of the church in Acts 2. Speaking in tongues was the ability of the disciples to speak in other known languages. The purpose was to provide a sign that authenticated the presence and power of God at the birth of the church. Warren Wiersbe adds that “The filling of the Spirit has to do with power for witness and service.”
Francis Chan wrote – God put His Spirit in us so we could be known for our power. Sadly, most believers and churches are known for talent and intellect rather than supernatural power. What’s worse is that we’re okay with it…. I’m willing to bet there are millions of churchgoers across America who cannot confidently say they have experienced His (the Spirit’s) presence or action in their lives over the past year. And many of them do not believe they can!” (Forgotten God)
Thank God for the power and presence of the Spirit in your life. Ask God to help you not neglect the power you have in Him.
