TUESDAY, AUGUST 16

10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home. 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying “We never saw anything like this!”

Mark 2:10-12

The Son of Man

In this passage, we are introduced to one of the titles used to describe Jesus’ identity and purpose. In verse 10 Jesus self identifies as the “SON OF MAN”. This title is used in Mark 14x and is used over 80x in the gospels. In fact, “Son of Man” is Jesus most popular identifier. Here are 3 things that the title “Son of Man” emphasizes about Jesus’ identity and purpose:

  • His HUMANITY– Jesus Christ is fully God AND fully man. Not only 100% God an 100% man but Jesus is the perfect human—living life in perfect dependence and obedience to God as we were created to do with the intention of bringing us back to God!
  • His SUFFERING + DEATH– Jesus gave up his life and took on the punishment of sin and death in order than all men would be able to get back into right relationship with God. He is the only one who could satisfy this penalty.
  • His FUTURE REIGN AS KING– Jesus is the one who will rule and reign over the new heavens and the new earth in which sin will be no more and death is ultimately defeated. A true reality in which man is perfectly reinstated to his rightful place as God originally intended.

Jesus, The Son of Man, has the authority to forgive sins as we see in Mark 2:10-11. Jesus, the Son of Man, is fully God and fully man. Jesus, the Son of Man, gave his life to restore all of creation back to God. Jesus, the Son of Man, will reign as King over all.

Jesus, the Son of Man, changes everything.
